Rutledge & Young records, 1860-1871.

Records chiefly consist of legal documents and correspondence. Legal case papers (1865-1867) for Eliza S. Lee v. Henry Gourdin and C.J. Durham concern a disputed property conveyance in an alleged breach of trust arrangement and include a bill of complaint, summonses, a contract between client and attorneys, reports, notes, chancellor's decree, and related letters to Henry E. Young. Other legal papers (1860), including a partial trial transcript, are for the case of Arthur Middleton v. Bickly Mazyck Desel and concern a controversy over a debt arising from the sale of a horse in 1858. In addition, there are documents pertaining to the settlement of various estates. A group of letters mainly consists of unclaimed letters from Rutledge & Young to debtors on behalf of creditor clients. There are also summonses to debtors. Other correspondence (1869-1870) includes letters to Henry E. Young regarding the collection of a debt from the Port Royal Railroad Company (Beaufort, S.C.) for the estate of Henry S. Clark. Other items include a letter (1865) from the Freedmen's Bureau concerning real estate restorations on Edisto Island (S.C.) and a printed act (1870) incorporating the Charleston Loan Company.
